Jim wicks - lead pastor

When I was a teenager, I felt a call in my life to work in ministry  for the Lord. As the years past, the Lord didn't reveal to me what  that meant or what that would eventually turn out to be. I went to  Northwest Nazarene University as a religion/ministry major and still,  the Lord did not show his plans for me. I completed two years at NNU  and after marring my college sweetheart, moved to Portland to start  our new life. I finished my degree at Portland State University, with  a major in Community Development and Urban Studies. I didn't know how  the Lord was going to use me, but I figured he would eventually show  me in His good timing.

And now, after an interesting journey (and a great story that I'd  love to share with you sometime), I find myself working for the  Community of Adsideo, a church in the heart of Portland committed to  serving the Lord with passion and to creating community in the midst  of a culture that is disenfranchised from church and each other. I  feel that God is truly fulfilling his call in my life through my time  serving each of those who attend the gathering and through my  commitment to this vision.

I feel so blessed to be used as the Music Pastor for this group of  people. I believe that through the Worship Arts people can find a way  to connect with God and with each other. This is something that can  carry through each day, not just during our gathering time on Sundays.

The two most important people in my life are my husband Jon, who is a  constant support to me, and  my son Cooper, who is the biggest joy in my life. Although God's plans for my life were unclear earlier in my  life, it is amazing to see the journey that I've walked and how it  has brought me to this great place where I can serve the Lord, my  family, and the Community of Adsideo with everything that I have.

Jim Wicks is the founding Pastor of the Community of Adsideo.  In the fall of 2006 Jim and his wife Gina along with a handful of other missional folks stepped out on an epic adventure desiring to be led by God in the neighborhood of Sellwood/Moreland.  They along with their boys Jacob and Jeremiah seek to live intentionally organic lives, inviting others to discover the mystery and fullness of living the God-life.  Jim is an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene and received a B.S. in Social Science from  Lewis/Clark State College and an A.A. in Religion from Northwest Nazarene College.  After working almost ten years in the Social Science field, Jim felt compelled to become an adventurer in the wilderness of re-visioning the Church.  Together Jim and Gina seek to lead a peace insurgency and work from within to bring harmony and beauty to this somewhat forgotten vision that God had for injustice.  Believing it is time for the Church to envision a new/old polemic in regards to injustice, they seek to become advocates for the voiceless,  brokenhearted, disenfranchised, and the forgotten.  Jim has a passion for reading, writing, and he can also be found drinking coffee (anywhere), rafting with friends, kayaking, backpacking, and spending time with his family.

So many times we as humans focus on the “goal,” or the “end result” and don’t enjoy the process that Christ is performing in our lives in that moment.  My process has been a beautiful one, one full of wonderful moments of interaction with God and the people he loves and others characterized by pain and darkness, but all days that have lead me to be part of this Community of Adsideo.  I consider myself a son of the church. My father has been a pastor my whole life and it has been a blessing to see an excellent example of how to love the people God places in front of us.  I have come to appreciate the imperfections but still value the process of growing up in the church and having the love of Christ poured into me by those that came before me.  In the spring of 2007 I graduated from Northwest Nazarene University with a degree in Religion with an emphasis in Youth Ministry.  As I look back on my years of formal education, I can see how God was directing my process, pulling on my heart, beckoning me towards him and the plans he has for me.  In the time that I have been a pastoral apprentice for Adsideo, God has continued to shape this lump of clay into the servant that he desires me to be.  I am blessed to be in this process, enjoying all that God has for me and loving the people that he puts in front of me

I grew up in a big family and have always enjoyed being in the company of people. My parent’s house was constantly full, so whether it was friends over or it just being our family, things were always busy. I love spending time with friends and family (now more than ever) and always get excited about meeting new people. When I moved from a small town in Washington to eventually become a “Portlander”,  I didn’t expect to know what that would look like but at the same time I didn’t see that there would be a drastic change that would take place in my heart and life.

I knew I wanted to serve and be used in ministry and feel very strongly that the neighborhood of Sellwood (located in SE Portland) is really the place I have been called to over the last 3 years. I have a passion for people and a desire to see healing and restoration come into the lives of those around me. I feel privileged to have been able to see Adsideo from the beginning to what it has now become.

Some of the things I enjoy doing here in our neighborhood include: biking and running the Springwater Corridor, occasionally working at a local flower shop, drinking coffee with friends, watching a good movie, and spending time with "my neighbors".

I was born and raised in beautiful Bend, OR and it was there that God began to re-order my life and give me a passion for the heart of people. The church I was raised in was a traditional reflection of church that caused me to recognize the need to engage on a more

relational and missional level in service to Christ and my neighbor.  God has called me and His love has compelled me to do more, to serve and share His love with those around me. After graduating from Northwest Nazarene University with a degree in Christian Ministries,

and after wrestling through some of life’s difficult experiences, I am excited that I find myself here, in this wonderful neighborhood of Sellwood in SE Portland. I moved here just over a year ago to join in the redemptive and restorative work that God is doing within and

through this community. I have enjoyed discovering the heartbeat of this neighborhood and meeting its inhabitants as I involve myself in various neighborhood events and volunteer opportunities.

This last year I have worked part-time at Starbucks and am blessed to use the rest of my time by serving as one of Adsideo’s bookkeepers and Ministry House organizers. I have only been here a year but it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with this community and

neighborhood. I love to run or ride my bike through the neighborhood or down the Springwater Corridor, read a great book on a blanket in the park, or simply spend time with friends at one of our many great local coffee shops. God has called me to do His work; to bring peace and show His love at all times. I am so blessed to answer this call

here in SE Portland
